Sending Photos

Sending your photo or digital image to Photo Memento is easy!

Accepted digital image formats:

JPEG, GIF, TIFF, Locked PNG (no transparency), BMP, PDF

For good results please supply a high definition image. A file size of approximately 500kb. A sharp image with good contrast will produce the best results.

For engraving: If the subject you want engraving is in a printed photo, they should be in high definition. For example on a 6×4 printed photo you would want the subject to be around half the picture. ie a close-up portrait.

What work’s well with photo engraved pendants:

The file size of your digital photo is very important as to how well it will engrave. You have to be aware the photo pendants are mostly the size of a 10p piece, so the level of detail visible to the human eye is limited by the size. For this reason we recommend close-up portraits of a person’s face with a strongly contrasting plain background. A blonde haired person photographed with a yellow wall background will not have a strong outline for the eye to focus on. Similarly a black dog photographed on a dark carpet will not work well in engraving. Flash photos can work well as they increase contrast between the subject and the background.

Please appreciate animals have very few defining features other than their outline. To create definition in an engraving relies on contrast and this is a problem with animals as their fur makes them effectively featureless. We will produce what is ordered but will not accept any liability if the finished product fails to live up to the customers expectations.

* The sharper the image with good contrast will produce better results.

If you supply an image that is out of focus or of low resolution this will compromise the quality of what we can produce.

If in doubt as to the quality of your image then email it as an attachment and we will give you a free assessment as to it’s suitability for printing on a photo gift. Please send your email to [email protected] and put “Photo quality?” in the subject field of your email. Thank you.

Please read the following description to understand why a picture on a computer screen can be highly detailed but when printed on a photo gift, you will not achieve the same level of detail:

The DPI measurement of a printer often needs to be considerably higher than the pixels per inch (PPI) measurement of a video display in order to produce similar-quality output. This is due to the limited range of colours for each dot typically available on a printer. At each dot position, the simplest type of colour printer can print no dot, or a dot consisting of a fixed volume of ink in each of four colour channels (typically CMYK with cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink). Contrast this to a standard sRGB monitor where each pixel produces 256 intensities of light in each of three channels (RGB) to additively create 2563 = 16,777,216 colours. The number of unique colours for a printed CMYK dot from this simplest type of inkjet printer is only 8 since no coloured ink is visible when printed on black.
While some colour printers can produce variable drop volumes at each dot position, and may use additional ink colour channels, the number of colours is still typically less than on a monitor. Most printers must therefore produce additional colours through a halftone or dithering process. The exception to this rule is a dye-sublimation printer that utilizes a printing method more akin to pixels per inch.

The printing process could require a region from four to six dots (measured across each side) in order to faithfully reproduce the colour contained in a single pixel. An image that is 100 pixels wide may need to be 400 to 600 dots in width in the printed output; if a 100×100-pixel image is to be printed inside a one-inch square, the printer must be capable of 400 to 600 dots per inch in order to accurately reproduce the image.
